Around 200 stalls and 130 exhibitors participated from across the country and abroad. Sawansukha Jewellers, BC Jain Jewellers, MP Jewellers, Surana Jewellers and Jalan Jewellers are some of the Calcutta labels that showcased their collection.
Organised by UBM India and Siddha Group, the first edition of the exhibition-cum-fair is aimed at promoting Calcutta’s jewellery craftsmanship. “We never had a platform to showcase jewellery and we had to go to other cities. So we decided to have a fair in our own city. It will be an annual event from now on,” said Vivek Jain of BC Jain Jewellers, who’s also the convener of the fair, adding that the demand for handcrafted jewellery from Calcutta is on the rise. “Calcutta has the best jewellery and it should be exhibited. The objective is to promote handcrafted jewellery,” said Siddhartha Sawansukha, CEO, Sawansukha Jewellers.
Apart from plain and studded gold jewellery, loose diamonds and stones were also displayed . “Youngsters like lightweight jewellery. They buy studs or solitaires that can go with all kinds of outfits,” said Jain. Three hundred students of Sawansukha Institute of Gemology and Jewellery Design also got a hands-on feel of the jewel trade.
